CPI interim Monitoring
Last September, KOFICE had monitoring visits to the fourteen organizations participating in the CPI 2019. In this visits, we met with the staffs in charge of the program in each organization, observed training sites, talked with some CPI participants, to better understand what programs have been operated, which aspects need to be improvement and so on.
Among the total 14 organizations, we would like to present a brief introduction of the cases of the following three organizations: the Organizing Committee of Jeonju International Sori Festival in traditional music, Trust Dance Theatre in contemporary dance, Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation in research and investigation.
01 The Organizing Committee of Jeonju International Sori Festival
The Organizing Committee of Jeonju International Sori Festival invited six musicians engaged in traditional music from India, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Indonesia, and has been conducting training from August through November under the title Asia SORI Project 2019. The musicians practiced tirelessly for important events lined up for them from the celebratory performance for the opening ceremony of the 2019 World Forum for Intangible Cultural Heritage hosted by ICHCAP in Jeonju in October as well as the world music performance at the National Gugak Center in Seoul, music recordings, and coverage by YTN.
It was not easy at first for the musicians to coordinate one another’s thoughts and establish musical teamwork, but they have ultimately created a beautiful ensemble through their collaborative efforts.
02 Trust Dance Theatre
At the Trust Dance Theatre, whose foundation lies in contemporary dance, there are four participants—two from Cambodia and two from Mongolia. They are carrying out a busy training program starting from the first performance that was presented on September 20th to subsequent performances that are scheduled from November 1st through 3rd and up to the final showcase on November 23rd
What is noteworthy about the training program offered by the Trust Dance Theatre is that the director herself is engaged firsthand in teaching the dance theory and practice classes, which allows her to maintain a close relationship with the participants and actively collect feedback through regular discussion sessions, and she can then reflect them in the training program. The participants, who are from countries that have relatively strong traditions in traditional dance, had the opportunity to expand their performance spectrum by learning the contemporary dance through this training.
03 Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation
At the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, six participants from six different countries (Mongolia, Myanmar, Laos, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Peru) are participating in the training program. It offers customized training for each participant in their respective fields such as Intangible Cultural Heritage or preservation science, which the participants find highly satisfactory. The foundation is also trying to provide support for facilities or experts necessary for each participant’s field of expertise.
Monitoring visits were an excellent opportunity to understand how the training programs/activities by each organization are being carried out. We believe, the suggestions and feedbacks from the organizations will improve quality and effectiveness of the CPI program in the future.
